St. Joseph's Church sold; Transfer Service Scheduled

This afternoon, St. Joseph's Church was sold to the Coptic Church.  Coptic Christianity has its roots in Egypt, being founded by St. Mark the Evangelist in Alexandria in the decades after the Resurrection.  As such they are seen as an apostolic church, as is the Roman Catholic Church.  Among the many similarities between our churches are the celebration of the seven sacraments, including the Holy Eucharist.

To mark the transfer of St. Joseph's Church from the Roman Catholic Church to the Coptic Church, we will have an ecumenical prayer service on the evening of Thursday, 14 November, at 7 p.m.; the church will be open at 6:30 p.m. for anyone wishing to come early for prayer.  This service will mark both the transfer of St. Joseph's to the Coptic Church, as well as the continuity in the use of the church as a place for the celebration of the Eucharist and other sacraments.  Following the service, a simple collation will take place in the lower church hall.  We hope you can join us!

Volunteers move the St. Joseph Food Cellar

"I Was Hungry..." Matthew 25:35

On January 1, 2013, Holy Ghost Church and St. Joseph's Church united to become St. Vincent de Paul Parish located at 71 Linden Street in Attleboro. The food pantry, a vital part of the St. Joseph parish life, is now located directly across the street from the new parish church, thanks to the efforts of the dedicated volunteers pictured above. Every Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., hungry community members receive food for themselves and their family. One day they will hear the Lord say, "I was hungry and you fed me".

To learn more about this ministry, including how to coordinate large food deliveries, please contact the parish office at 508-226-1115 x 2.

DOE Personal Testimony

Our Day of Evangelization on Saturday 24 August is getting very close now. We are in the final days of recruiting as many helpers as possible so that we can reach as many souls as possible on the DOE day itself. To this end, at most of last weekend's masses members of the DOE teams made a personal  appeal to the wider parish family to ask for more good souls to come forward to join us in this prayer-filled and Spirit-led effort.

In a most profound talk at 4 PM Mass on Saturday, Joe DePietro of our DOE Publicity Team spoke beautifully and explained how our DOE efforts completely align with both Church teaching and the wonderful witness of our Holy Father Pope Francis. The DOE Parish team wanted to share Joe's talk. Please see below...

"My name is Joe DePietro.  My family and I have been parishioners at St. Joseph’s and now SVP since 2006.
As you know, SVP Parish is doing a Day of Evangelization on Saturday August 24th from 7:40am-2:00pm.  On “The Day” we will go Door to Door throughout the streets of Attleboro for Christ.
Our Goal is to organize up to 200 Catholics to support the Day of Evangelization. Up to 100 of these people will support the day, while up to 50 pairs of 2 will go and knock on up to 2000 doors throughout our parish boundaries, and make up to 1000 contacts with people, to gently and lovingly invite them to come and be a part of our Church.  So far, there are about 90 people registered (some have volunteered from other parishes), but we would like to invite more, if you are so called.
Who are we doing this for?  We are doing this for Christ and his Church, to build the Body of Christ and to bring Christ to our world, which is in desperate need of the hope and joy that only Christ can give.
Why am I doing this?  I have never gone door to door to evangelize before but I am going to do it because, I want to give a witness to Christ and what he has done in my life, and to personally invite others to partake in the Sacramental Life,  what our Parish community offers and what our Church teaches.
What feeling will I get?  I imagine it will be a spiritual and uplifting experience, even if I can help move just one person, closer to, or on a path towards our Lord and Savior.
The Catechism says, paragraph 1285 which is the first paragraph on the Sacrament of Confirmation says: “as true witnesses of Christ”, the confirmed “are obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.”
1 Peter 3:15-16 says, “Always be ready to give anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence”…
In closing, we need to Evangelize because Christ commands us to do so when he said in Matthew 28:19 “go and make disciples of all nations”.  This was the theme of World Youth Day in Brazil, where at the closing Mass on July 28th, Pope Francis reminded us to “Go, Be Not Afraid, and Serve”.  He states that Christ through the Holy Spirit helps us to do this, even if we don’t feel ready, as God said to Jeremiah, who feared he could not speak because he was too young.  God said, “be not afraid for I am with you to deliver you” (Jer 1:7, 8).  Our Pope emphasized that Jesus did not say “one of you go”, but he said “all of you go”, go and make disciples of all nations.  Finally he said to do this, not in isolation, but as a community, with the communion of saints and in the companionship of the whole church.
In the case of the Day of Evangelization, happening on Saturday August 24th 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Attleboro, we are choosing to be obedient to our Shepherd.

If you would like to participate in our Day of Evangelization, you can visit our parish web-site at http://www.stvincentattleboro.org for on-line registration.

I’d also be happy to answer any questions, after Mass.  Thank you and we pray that you will participate in this parish event in any way you can!"

Thank you to Joe and all the other members of our DOE teams who were willing to offer DOE testimonies at last weekend's masses - Deacon Tony, Ruben Chevere, Mary Hayes, and John Davis.

"For God All Things Are Possible" Matthew 19:26

With the message of HOPE, young people from across the Fall River Diocese gathered in Attleboro, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 20th. After uniting in peace-filled prayer to spiritually support women frightened by the child developing in their womb, they came to St. Vincent de Paul parish for nourishment.
First, the young adults participated in Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Riley Williams.
Then, high school and college-aged young people gathered in the parish hall.
They were served a hot buffet breakfast.

The breakfast was prepared by devoted members of Body of Christ.
Friendships were formed.
Hope was celebrated.
Laughter was abundant.
Leadership skills increased.
Opportunities to learn were at every corner.
Young people were heard.
And attentive, caring mentors shared their hearts as they volunteered their time, talent and treasure.
Next year this could be you!

Supporting Women Experiencing Pregnancy and Homelessness

Ordinary people "hearing the call" and responding in extraordinary ways.

On Sunday, July 28th, members of multiple faith communities learned firsthand how the Catholic Church is responding to women who are experiencing both pregnancy and homelessness.

Sherry Robbins, the Visitation House Social Service Manager, shared how the home helps women protect the life of the child in her womb through material, emotional and spiritual support.

Members in attendance also listened to one of the Visitation House guests share her story. Additional educational support may have helped her develop the skills needed to avoid homelessness. However, the Visitation House helped her regain her dignity and her connection to her family of origin. In a few weeks, her new baby will be welcomed into the Catholic Family through baptism. Some members in the audience will witness this Sacramental Celebration.

On Sunday, August 11th at 6:30 p.m. (following the 5:30 Mass) a group will leave SVDP parish to travel to the Visitation House for a tour. At that time, donations will be delivered. All are welcome to join us for the tour and to add donations to the crib located in the church. A wish list is available at the following link: http://visitationhouse.org/wishlist.html

For additional insight, consider listening to the key note address given at the 2013 Visitation House Fundraising Dinner by Erika Bachiochi - click here to see the video.

"There is a light in this worlda healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways." Mother Teresa

Sacred Heart of Jesus Procession

On Saturday, June 29, 2013, the Hispanic Apostolate for the Diocese of Fall River led a procession from Capron Park to St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Parish in Attleboro. While reciting the rosary in multiple languages, the community carried a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Five stops were made along the way. At each stop, a mystery of the Joyful Rosary was performed. At the end of the procession, all gathered in the SVdP Parish Church for adoration, followed by a community meal in the parish hall.

Next DOE Information Meeting - Monday, 8 July

Please mark your calendar for our next Day of Evangelization (DOE) Information and Training Evening - Monday, 8 July at 6.45 PM in Holy Ghost Church

More than 50 volunteers participated in our last DOE meeting on June 17th, and more Catholics in the area are getting involved in some capacity every day.  We are looking for a total of 200 volunteers to support the day of evangelization, in either a support or door to door role.  The volunteers can be from our own parish or surrounding parishes. Please ask friends, family and neighbors to get involved. Everyone is welcome! Come to our next meeting and you can learn to sing the D2D song that’s getting everyone excited to participate in a successful event!  We look forward to seeing you!

For more information, please contact Kathy Harum, DOE Contact, via the Parish Office on 508-226-1115.

Want to know more about our DOE logo?  Some quick facts...

  1. The logo is an original design by the wonderfully talented Kathy Harum, our Parish DOE contact.
  2. The commanding presence of the Cross is central to the image and our DOE efforts.
  3. In Kathy’s striking image, the “D2D” command radiates from the heart of the Cross.
  4. The rays emanating from the Cross are white and red – symbolizing, as in Sister Faustina’s image of Divine Mercy, the blood and water which poured forth from “the one whom they had pierced” (Pope Benedict XVI). This beautiful symbolism reminds us of the centrality of Christ in all that we do as Christians.
  5. The core “D2D” message symbolizes the “door-to-door” aspect of the ministry. The connotation of our being sent out in pairs (see Luke 10:1-23) is captured in the use of the numeral “2”. We pray that the Holy Spirit will bless all of our efforts and “send us out” in response to Christ’s command (John 20:21).
  6. The “D2D” message is colored blue to symbolize our Holy Mother, “the first Disciple of her Son” (Pope John Paul II), in whose footsteps we aspire to follow.
  7. The core reason for our DOE efforts is summarized in the “Door to Door for Christ” message at the bottom of Kathy’s image. As Father Riley has commented, this is our response to the Great Commission, “Go, make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
